The Old Members in the Academy Still Love Their Boomer Bait

There is no question that young cinephiles have plenty to be excited about after today's nominations. Ryan Coogler's record-breaking Sinners became the most nominated film in Academy Awards history, Josh Safdie received his first ever Best Director nomination for Marty Supreme, and for the second year in a row, a Brazilian film (The Secret Agent) made it into the top category.

Still, the simultaneous inclusion of F1 and Song Sung Blue suggests that there is no easy consensus anymore about what the overall tastes of the Academy are. Some members want boundary-pushing genre material, while others want good old-fashioned awards bait. Some folks want a greater diversity of artists represented, while others want to nominate people who have been working in Hollywood for decades.

Unfortunately, to accommodate this wider range of Academy tastes, there were inevitably some casualties. So before we spend the next two months thinking about the films that were nominated, let's have a moment of silence for those that didn't make the cut. These include international filmmakers like Jafar Panahi (It Was Just an Accident)and Park Chan-wook (No Other Choice), rising stars like Chase Infiniti (One Battle After Another) and Odessa A'zion (Marty Supreme), and critically acclaimed indie darlings like Eva Victor (Sorry Baby) and Mary Bronstein (If I Had Legs I'd Kick You). Just because a bunch of old guys like Mel refused to take these contenders seriously does not mean the rest of us should forget about the incredible work these un-nominated artists did this year!
